From the couple...

The night that we got engaged was such an incredible night for both of us, and we were so blessed to be able to share it with a few of our closest friends. We both can look back and easily say that it was one of the best days of our lives. That being said, we both had pretty different viewpoints of the whole event, so we decided that we would both write something separately and put them both on the website! Enjoy!

Kirby & Alex

The Bride:

I’m really hard to surprise. I am usually pretty observant and can tell when people are up to something. That being said, Alex definitely played his cards right! I thought I had it all figured out that he was going to ask for my parents’ permission the weekend after and we would get engaged shortly after that. I was fairly wrong, but that does put some of this into perspective.

A few weeks before, two of my best friends were very insistent about coming to visit me for the weekend. I probably would have been a little suspicious, but again, did not realize all of this was coming, but I was having a blast and it was great getting to spend time with them. One of our other friends happened to be there and called me that weekend saying he needed to film Alex and I Sunday night for a project in a film class he was taking and that we needed to dress up for it (probably would have been suspicious here too). I was very reluctant, thinking this was silly, but agreed to it anyway. That afternoon I said goodbye to my friends (who then hung out in Starbucks for hours instead of going home), went to youth group, and then went to film this video appropriately titled ‘Darkness.’

We finally finished and drove back to the apartments. Every Sunday we went to the St. Andrews Chapel across the street to pray together, so it was pretty natural for Alex to suggest that we go ahead and make our way there. Our friend decided to come too to take pictures of the chapel for a social media account he runs. I fumbled with my keys and finally opened the door, only to see a TON of people in there, holding candles, and smiling at me. I was FREAKED out to say the least haha. My mind was racing trying to figure out what in the world was going on. I scanned the room and saw my two best friends in the front row, the ones who had left hours before. It was then I figured out just what was happening. Alex pulled me in the middle and started talking. I honestly don’t think I heard a thing he said because I just started bawling. All of a sudden he was down on one knee and he asked me to marry him. I responded yes through the snot and tears, but wasn’t sure he heard me so I said it again louder. He stood up, put the ring on my finger, gave me a big hug and kiss and everyone started cheering. And the rest, as they say, is history!

The Groom:

I had been planning this engagement for months. See, Kirby is really hard to surprise, but she had made me promise her over and over that I would find some way to surprise her with the engagement. So I did. I managed to sneak away to Greenville and get the ring without her knowing with the help of James and Griffin, I managed to tell all of our closest friends (even her own sister, who, according to Kirby, is TERRIBLE at keeping secrets!), and I managed to get everyone assembled and into the St. Andrews chapel without Kirby having any idea.

I have never been more nervous in my entire life than I was that day. Things got thrown off a little bit when Kirby decided to go to Mass early rather than in the evening like we normally do after helping with Youth Group, but with the help of my friend Josh, we kept her distracted long enough to stay in the nice outfit that Samantha and Elizabeth had managed to convince her to wear that day by having her go film a video in complete darkness. It was called "Darkness."

My heart was pounding as we walked up to the chapel, and we opened the door to all of our friends standing there waiting for us, and Kirby froze. I had to nudge her into the chapel, and she burst into tears when she finally got her head wrapped around what had happened. From there, the rest is history--I got down on one knee, she said yes before I even asked (don't worry though, I made sure to get an official answer after I actually got to ask!), and now we're getting married! Mission accomplished.
